Blues in the Schools December Update
by Jeff Koepke
Blues in the Schools (BITS) hit the ground running after the summer break. It's been a busy fall semester with many good stories to tell.
On September 7th, we visited Canon City High School at the request of the Fremont Community Foundation (FCF). FCF spons the Holy Cow Moosic Fesitval and thought BITS might be a good way to promote the event to local students. Big Jim Adam and John Stilwagen gave two abbreviated presentations of their outstanding multimedia program "The Real Blues Tour". Also sitting in were George Whitesell on tenor sax and Austin Young on electric guitar. Tim Young (Austin's father) joined the group on djembe for a few songs.
The kids really responded to Austin, and I'm glad that we were able to give them the opportunity to see the blues played by one of their peers. Big Jim did a great job of featuring Austin in this regard, too. Big Jim also brought audience members up to the microphone to improvise blues lyrics, and one student even took Jim's guitar to deliver an entire song. We all were impressed!
